G Gathering Portsmouth Sports Club Honors the Eastern Amateur Golf Tournament

Portsmouth Sports Club Honors the Eastern Amateur Golf Tournament

The Portsmouth Sports Club welcomed its new President James Short at its last meeting while James welcomed everyone in attendance and introduced the speaker for the day. A member of the club himself, Karl Quinn took pride in presenting to the club highlights surrounding the Eastern Amateur Golf Tournament. Karl discussed the 57-year history of the tournament, which is truly the East Coast's most heralded amateur golfing event. Winners over the years have included many who have gone on to be highly regarded PGA Professionals, such as Curtis Strange, Dean Beamon, the Golf Channel's Arron Oberholser, and several others. Participants from all over the world travel to the tournament, from as far as Japan, Australia, and South Africa, but this year's winner was much closer to home: Chris Hickman of East Tennessee State University, with record score for the event of 258 (-22).

As demonstrated by the 2014 tournament winner, participation in this event is highly sought by collegiate golfers aspiring for the PGA. The tournament provides experience for these hopeful professionals and offers first-hand knowledge of what to expect if and when they earn their PGA card. Even more importantly, the Eastern Amateur Golf Tournament is run entirely by volunteers, such as Karl Quinn, and provides $6,000 each year toward college scholarships for deserving high school students.

Portsmouth Sports Club meets the third Monday of every month.
